Engineering colleges near Salt Lake and New Town

New Town (Rajarhat) has TINT, UEM Kolkata, Sister Nivedita University and Amity University Kolkata. Studying close to the IT companies makes internships and campus visits easier.
MAKAUT colleges or private universities?
Most private engineering colleges in Kolkata, such as TMSL, TINT, Heritage, Narula, MSIT and NSEC, are affiliated to MAKAUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology), which sets the syllabus and awards the degree. Private universities such as Techno India University, UEM Kolkata, Sister Nivedita University, Adamas and Brainware award their own degrees. Both are valid for jobs and higher studies; compare fees, placements and accreditation instead.
How to get admission
- WBJEE: the state exam; WBJEEB counselling fills most B.Tech seats in West Bengal's government and private colleges.
- JEE Main: needed for IIEST Shibpur and NIT Durgapur (through JoSAA), and some seats in West Bengal private colleges are also filled with JEE Main ranks in WBJEEB counselling.
- College-level routes: IEM Kolkata runs IEMJEE counselling, and seats left after counselling are filled by the colleges themselves (management quota), usually at a higher fee.

How to choose the right engineering college
- Branch first: decide between CSE (and its AI & ML, Data Science and Cyber Security specialisations), IT, ECE and core branches, then shortlist colleges that are realistic for your rank in that branch.
- Median, not highest, package: one ₹30 LPA offer says little; the median or average salary and the placement percentage tell you more.
- Total cost: add hostel, transport and one-time charges to the tuition, and check scholarships such as IEM's tuition waivers and the TFW seats in WBJEE counselling.
- Accreditation: NAAC and NBA accreditation (IEM, TMSL's CSE and Electrical, TINT's NAAC 2024) show that a college has been reviewed.
- Location: a campus near Salt Lake or New Town means easier internships and a shorter commute.
