B.Tech Admission in Kolkata 2027: WBJEE, JEE Main, IEMJEE & Management Quota

B.Tech admission in Kolkata 2027: WBJEE and JEE Main counselling, IEMJEE, management quota, TFW seats, documents, fees and colleges for your rank.

Getting a B.Tech seat in Kolkata is mostly about one thing: how you use your WBJEE or JEE Main rank in counselling. But there are other routes too, such as IEM's own IEMJEE counselling, institute-level (management quota) seats and lateral entry for diploma holders. This guide explains each route for 2027 admissions, the documents you need, the fees to budget for and which colleges are realistic for your rank.

Ways to get B.Tech admission in Kolkata

  1. WBJEE counselling: the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) fills most B.Tech seats in the state's government and private engineering colleges, including Jadavpur University, Techno Main Salt Lake, Techno International New Town and Techno India University.
  2. JEE Main: needed for IIEST Shibpur and NIT Durgapur through JoSAA counselling. Some seats in West Bengal private colleges are also filled with JEE Main ranks in WBJEEB counselling.
  3. College-run counselling: IEM Kolkata runs IEMJEE counselling for its own B.Tech seats, based on your marks.
  4. Institute-level seats (management quota): seats left after counselling are filled by the colleges themselves, usually at a higher fee.
  5. Lateral entry: diploma holders join the second year of B.Tech through JELET.

WBJEE counselling, step by step

  1. Register on the WBJEEB counselling portal after the result and pay the counselling fee.
  2. Fill and lock your choices: list college and branch pairs in the order you prefer them. This is the most important step, so put your dream choices first and safe choices at the end.
  3. Check your allotment after each round.
  4. Accept the seat by paying the seat-acceptance fee, and choose whether you want to be considered for an upgrade in later rounds.
  5. Report to the college with your documents, finish verification and pay the college fee.

Dates change every year, so follow the official notices on the WBJEEB website and do not miss the choice-locking deadline.

JEE Main route

A JEE Main rank opens two doors in and around Kolkata. Through JoSAA you can get IIEST Shibpur or NIT Durgapur. Through WBJEEB counselling, some seats in West Bengal private colleges are kept for JEE Main candidates, which helps students from outside the state. IEM Kolkata also accepts JEE Main ranks and gives a full tuition waiver for JEE Main ranks 1 to 10,000.

IEMJEE: IEM Kolkata's own counselling

IEM Kolkata fills part of its B.Tech intake through IEMJEE counselling, where eligibility depends on your Class 10 and 12 marks and the branch:

  • CSE: 80% in Class 10 and Class 12.
  • CSE (AI & ML): 75%, with 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
  • CSE (AI) and IT: 70%, with 50% in PCM.
  • CSE (Data Science), AI & DS, IoT, Cyber Security, Biotechnology, ECE, Electrical, Mechanical: 60%, with 45% in PCM.

The B.Tech at IEM costs ₹9.45 lakh for 4 years, and a booking amount (₹50,000 if you are still in Class 12, ₹1,40,000 if you have passed) holds the seat. See the IEM Kolkata page for details.

Management quota: what it is and how to stay safe

When counselling ends, private colleges fill their vacant seats themselves. These are often called management quota or direct admission seats. They are legitimate, but the fee is usually higher than the counselling fee and set by the college. To stay safe:

  • Ask for the college's official fee sheet and pay only to the college's own bank account, against a receipt.
  • Check that the branch and intake are approved (AICTE approval and the university affiliation).
  • Be careful with anyone who promises a "guaranteed seat" for cash.

For example, Techno Main Salt Lake charges about ₹4.02 lakh on a counselling seat, and its management-quota fee is higher; ask the college for the current figure.

TFW seats and scholarships

  • TFW (Tuition Fee Waiver): in WBJEE counselling, some seats in each college waive the tuition fee for students from lower-income families (you need an income certificate as per WBJEEB rules).
  • IEM Kolkata: full tuition waiver for 4 years for WBJEE ranks 1 to 1,000 and JEE Main ranks 1 to 10,000.
  • State scholarships: students can apply for schemes such as Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means (SVMCM).

Documents you need

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates (Class 10 admit card as proof of age).
  • WBJEE or JEE Main admit card and rank card, and the seat allotment letter.
  • Category certificate (SC, ST or OBC) and income certificate for TFW, if applicable.
  • Domicile certificate for West Bengal Home State seats, if applicable.
  • Photo ID (Aadhaar), passport-size photos and, at some colleges, a medical fitness certificate.

Which colleges can you get with your rank?

Closing ranks change every year, but 2025 gives a useful guide for CSE (General, All India):

  • Top ranks: Jadavpur University for the best WBJEE ranks; IEM Kolkata waives the full tuition fee for WBJEE ranks within 1,000.
  • Around 10,000: Techno Main Salt Lake CSE closed at about rank 8,700 in round 1 and about 10,500 in the last round.
  • Higher ranks: Techno International New Town has 300 CSE seats, and its CSE closed close to rank 99,000 in the final round.

Core branches and CSE specialisations close at different ranks, so check the latest opening and closing ranks before you lock your choices.

Fees to budget for

  • IEM Kolkata: ₹9.45 lakh for 4 years.
  • Techno India University: ₹6.32 lakh (₹79,000 a semester).
  • Techno International New Town: about ₹5 lakh to ₹7.65 lakh, depending on the branch.
  • Techno Main Salt Lake: about ₹4.02 lakh.

Add hostel, mess, transport and one-time charges to these amounts. Compare more colleges in our list of top engineering colleges in Kolkata.
