IEM Kolkata vs Techno Main Salt Lake (TMSL): Fees, Placements & Cutoff Compared

IEM Kolkata vs Techno Main Salt Lake (TMSL): B.Tech fees, admission routes, scholarships and placements compared, plus IEM vs UEM and IEM vs Heritage.

IEM Kolkata and Techno Main Salt Lake (TMSL) are the two best-known private engineering colleges in Salt Lake Sector V, and "IEM vs Techno India" is one of the most common questions WBJEE students ask. The two differ sharply on fees and admission routes but report similar placement averages. Here is a side-by-side comparison based on what each college publishes, followed by IEM vs UEM and IEM vs Heritage.

IEM Kolkata vs TMSL at a glance

  • Founded: IEM in 1989; TMSL in 2001 (as Techno India, Salt Lake).
  • Status: IEM is a school of the University of Engineering & Management (UEM), Kolkata, with NAAC grade "A" and NBA-accredited CSE, IT, ECE, Electrical and MBA. TMSL is affiliated to MAKAUT, with NBA-accredited CSE, Electrical and Food Technology.
  • Admission: IEM accepts WBJEE, JEE Main and its own IEMJEE counselling. TMSL fills B.Tech seats through WBJEE and JEE Main ranks in WBJEEB counselling (JELET for lateral entry).
  • B.Tech fees: IEM ₹9.45 lakh for 4 years; TMSL about ₹4.02 lakh.
  • Scholarships: IEM waives the full tuition fee for WBJEE ranks 1 to 1,000 and JEE Main ranks 1 to 10,000. At TMSL, eligible lower-income students can get a TFW (Tuition Fee Waiver) seat through WBJEE counselling.
  • Placements: IEM reported 95% placement in 2023 with an average CTC of ₹7.81 LPA, and NIRF 2025 data shows a median of about ₹6 LPA for its 2023-24 B.Tech graduates. TMSL reported 96% placement in 2023 with an average of ₹7.5 LPA and a highest CTC of ₹29 LPA.
  • Location: both are in Salt Lake Sector V, Kolkata's IT hub.

Fees: IEM vs TMSL

This is the biggest difference. IEM charges ₹1,40,000 for the first semester and ₹1,15,000 for each of the next seven, ₹9.45 lakh in total, the same for every branch. TMSL's B.Tech costs ₹56,200 in the first semester and between ₹41,300 and ₹51,750 afterwards, about ₹4.02 lakh in total on a counselling seat. In other words, IEM costs more than twice as much, unless you qualify for its tuition waiver, in which case IEM becomes the cheaper option.

Placements: IEM vs TMSL

The averages the two colleges report are close: ₹7.81 LPA at IEM and ₹7.5 LPA at TMSL, both for 2023, with about 95% of students placed at each. Recruiters overlap too (TCS, Accenture, Cognizant, Capgemini, Infosys), while IEM also lists Amazon, Adobe, SAP and PwC. Because the fee gap is large and the placement gap is small, TMSL usually gives the better return for students paying full fees.

Admission and cut-off

TMSL is one of the most sought-after private colleges in WBJEE: in 2025 its CSE seats (General, All India) closed at about rank 8,700 in round 1 and about 10,500 in the last round. IEM gives you more routes. Besides WBJEE and JEE Main, you can apply through IEMJEE counselling, where eligibility depends on your marks: 80% in Class 10 and 12 for CSE, 75% for CSE (AI & ML), 70% for CSE (AI) and IT, and 60% for the other branches. Read our B.Tech admission in Kolkata guide for the full process.

Which is better for CSE?

  • Your WBJEE rank is within about 10,000: TMSL CSE gives similar placements at less than half the fee.
  • You have strong Class 12 marks but a weaker rank: IEM's IEMJEE route can still get you CSE, if the fee fits your budget.
  • Your WBJEE rank is within 1,000 or your JEE Main rank within 10,000: IEM's full tuition waiver makes it very attractive.
  • You care about accreditation: both have NBA-accredited CSE; IEM also has NAAC grade "A".

IEM vs UEM Kolkata

IEM and UEM Kolkata belong to the same IEM-UEM Group, but they are different campuses. IEM is the older institute in Salt Lake, founded in 1989, and now runs as a school of UEM. UEM Kolkata is the group's private university in New Town, set up in 2014, and admits through WBJEE, JEE Main and the group's own counselling. Compare the fee and the branch you can get at each before you accept a seat.

IEM vs Heritage Institute of Technology

Heritage Institute of Technology in Anandapur is an autonomous MAKAUT college set up in 2001. Its B.Tech fee is about ₹1.5 lakh a year (indicative), well below IEM's ₹2.4 lakh a year average, and it is a strong choice for CSE and CSBS. See the Heritage B.Tech placements 2024.

IEM vs Techno India University

Techno India University is also in Sector V and charges ₹79,000 a semester (₹6.32 lakh in total), less than IEM. It reported 89% placement in 2022 with an average of ₹4 LPA, below IEM's reported ₹7.81 LPA average. If you are choosing between Techno colleges, see TMSL vs TINT vs TIU.

Frequently asked questions

Is IEM better than Techno India (TMSL)?

Neither is better for everyone. Their reported placement averages are close (₹7.81 LPA vs ₹7.5 LPA in 2023), but IEM costs ₹9.45 lakh and TMSL about ₹4.02 lakh. TMSL usually wins on value; IEM wins if you get its scholarship or need the IEMJEE route.

Can I get IEM without WBJEE?

Yes. IEM accepts JEE Main ranks and runs its own IEMJEE counselling, which is based on your Class 10 and 12 marks and the branch you want.

Are IEM and TMSL in the same area?

Yes. Both are in Salt Lake Sector V, Kolkata's IT hub, a few minutes apart.
